While Ella and Nuwara Eliya are the stars of the show, Sri Lanka's Hill Country is vast and full of secrets. If you're willing to step off the popular train route, you'll find mist-shrouded valleys and waterfalls where the only sound is the wind in the tea leaves.
1. Mandaram Nuwara: The Mist City
Tucked at the foot of Piduruthalagala (Sri Lanka's highest peak), Mandaram Nuwara is a village surrounded by waterfalls and mountains. Because of its valley position, it rarely sees direct sunlight for long, earning its name "the city in the mist." It's a paradise for hikers and those seeking total isolation.
2. Adisham Bungalow, Haputale
A Benedictine monastery that looks like it was plucked out of the English countryside. Built in 1931, this stone mansion and its orchards offer a peace that is hard to find in the busier hill towns. The view from the "World's End" at nearby Lipton's Seat is iconic, but Adisham is a quiet soul's retreat.
Perfect Photo Spot:
Head to the Demodara Loop early in the morning. Everyone goes to Nine Arch Bridge, but watching the train spiral over its own track at the loop is a true engineering marvel that many tourists miss.
3. Aberdeen Falls
Located near Ginigathena, this 98-meter waterfall is one of the most beautiful on the island but sees much less foot traffic than Devon or St. Clair's. The hike down to the base pool is refreshing, and you'll often have the entire view to yourself.
4. Riverston & Pitawala Pathana
Often called "Mini World's End," Riverston is part of the Knuckles Mountain Range. The windy road leads you to breathtaking drops and unique high-altitude plains. It's colder and more rugged than Ella, perfect for true adventure seekers.
5. Bogawantalawa: The Golden Valley
This is tea country at its most pristine. Bogawantalawa is home to some of the finest tea bungalows in the world. Stroll through the estates and visit the Christ Church Warmsley, a beautiful colonial church that feels frozen in time since the 1870s.
